Customer service, recruiting, contests, giveaways and promotions — these are all standbys for businesses using Twitter as a medium to connect with customers and fans.

Given that Twitter as a platform supports nearly limitless applications for business use, we thought it time to highlight some of the newer Twitter-for-business opportunities that aren’t so obvious.

From pitching your followers and rewarding Twitter loyalty, to keeping a trained eye on the Twitterverse, targeting smaller communities, and adding metadata to tweets, here are some unique ways to use Twitter in your social business strategy.

1. Pitch Your Followers

As part of Mountain Dew’s DEWmocracy campaign, the soda company empowered Flavor Nations — fan communities for new Dew flavors — to own a flavor of soda that the company is now testing on the market. Mountain Dew literally ceded control of the go-to-market strategy for each of these flavors to the consumer communities.

As part of the creative process, Mountain Dew even made advertising agencies pitch the Flavor Nations with their creative. While this wasn’t done via Twitter alone, the notion of putting brand advocates in the position of power is pretty remarkable.

You could steal from the Dew’s strategy and find a way to give your biggest brand advocates creative control over your next event, campaign or company initiative. Spend the time internally to craft a few solid ideas and then pitch them to your followers. This should be much more than a poll or vote, and instead more akin to empowering your Twitter influencers as project stakeholders.

2. Reward Loyalty

Tasti D-Lite’s initiatives are defining the social media loyalty program. A huge part of their strategy is automatically rewarding customers with TreatCards when they tweet about the brand. It’s also an important part of their plan to build brand awareness so that they can open more stores across the United States. Starbucks has similar notions around loyalty and social media and is experimenting with Foursquare for that purpose.

Both companies have recognized that there is real business value every time a customer or fan shares their purchase behaviors with their friends. If you can find a way to automatically reward loyalty for Twitter-sharing, you’ll be motivating your audiences to spread your message for you. It’s a win-win for everyone, as long as you carefully consider the image of your customer and the message they push out to their followers.

3. Market Research

All too often, Twitter is used only for distribution purposes. But in fact, it’s a valuable tool for keeping tabs on your competitors, as well as your brand’s existing fans.

Power Twitter users have learned the advantages of keeping a careful eye on the network’s trends, and that they can perfect the market research capabilities of Twitter by using Twitter Lists. Business users should absolutely follow suit.

Invest several hours in building a few solid lists that you can easily track every day. Make sure that you track down innovators, influencers, those that break news in your space. Competitors and those that your competitors follow — both companies and individuals alike — are also key. Then remember to add to each list moving forward as you find more relevant names.

If you really want to use Twitter for market research, create a list of your biggest brand advocates and loudest brand naysayers and hang on their every word — even if that means reading up on their weekend activities. If you can get into the minds and lives of the people you’re trying to serve, you’ll have a better idea of what your customer wants.

On this front, get yourself a Twitter application that supports Lists in a way that works for you. I find Echofon for Mac ideal for this purpose, as there’s one list that I watch like hawk — I call it my “Stalking” list. It’s private, but it includes every person and company in the industry that breaks news relevant to what I write about. The application alerts me, with audio notifications if I so choose, any time there are new incoming tweets on the list I’m watching. Other applications are just as list-friendly, so don’t be afraid to try a few out.

4. Target Niche Audiences

The beauty of Twitter is that you can potentially reach anyone in the world with a single 140 character tweet. That’s powerful stuff, but with that kind of reach, business users often forget to narrow the scope of their Twitter presence and connect with smaller communities. While Promoted Tweets aren’t live for everyone, they will offer business users a highly sophisticated way to target their tweets to more niche audiences.

Take Virgin America for instance. The Twitter-savvy brand wasted no time targeting Promoted Tweets toward their inflight WiFi customers. On launch, the company put out three distinct tweets that they then promoted with carefully crafted keywords. Two of the tweets were meant to engage just their passengers at 35,000 feet. Just imagine how cool it would be to fly Virgin America and uncover a tweet that was meant just for you. That’s the power of talking to a smaller audience.

No brand or business should turn to Promoted Tweets or alternative Twitter advertising options for a cheap Twitter win. Your audience will only respect your Twitter presence if you demonstrate that your ultimate goal is to serve their needs (and not your own). If used wisely, targeting niche audiences with Promoted Tweets could be a powerful way to use Twitter for business on a whole new level.

5. Add Your Own Metadata

Beginning next quarter, Twitter will introduce annotations as a way for developers to attach any kind of metadata — tags, notes, location — they want to tweets. While we’ll no doubt see a number of developers build applications for unique purposes — some of them with the business user in mind — we see this as a prime opportunity for radical businesses to craft their own applications with metadata specific to their goals.

Used in combination with the simplistic developer tools available via @anywhere, this could be a powerful way to add Twitter integrations to your site, append notes about visitors’ on-site Twitter behaviors, tag tweets that originate from your site, or attach your own identifiers and figure out ways to reward actions (perhaps even loyalty). There’s definitely opportunity to be creative and better track Twitter-related data at the same time.

    Kids of divorced homes should they marry each other?
    For example if you have a daughter you wouldnt marry her to a guy whos parents are divorced right?Or if you have a son you wouldnt marry him to a girl who’s parents are divorced right?In my case my parents are divorced and i really like this girl but her parents are also divorced.There are many reasons i like her but just 2 get 2 the point she told her friend that she doesnt want 2 go in2 a divorced home keeping in mind she is also in a divorced home living with her mother as i am also.My mom her mom have been friends for over 17years.Now the thing is about me im about 2 get pretty well known starting my own business i deal with NBA players etc unique ways of marketing all sorts of things in about a month im going 2 have this MASSIVE facebook marketing thing i have like so many people ready 2 post my website on their wall and i know she is friends with like several of them what im saying is she is going 2 be exposed 2 my "fame" for sure now her BFF she WANTS her 2 marry me she knows i like her but the girl is kind of i guess lost or whatever so for her 2 say she doesnt want 2 go in2 a divorced him keeping in mind NO ONE here in dallas has sent her a proposal and her BFF told me she might want 2 go back 2 Pakistan and get a guy but that is just DISASTEROUS i mean its going 2 take AT LEAST 5 years for him 2 get here 2 USA legal/immigration issues u no what i mean so am i just overthinking this and should just wait about a month once the whole dallas starts talking about me and let me just explain in my culture (Pakistani) i was born there came 2 usa when i was 2 im 23 so not a FOB i got my own company website coming out in 2-3 weeks im pretty well know amongst several NBA players all im saying is all the pakistani aunties that live here in dallas they ALLLL know my fam and her fam so I KNOW 100% SURE once they hear about me got my own business this and that they are ALL going 2 GOSSIP btw pakistani ladies are THE BEST @gossiping TRUST ME my mom told me she had 2 stay away from some women cuz of that so once that all starts they are ALL GOING 2 like convince her mom 2 get her daughter married 2 me which is good for me i want 2 but its all up to the girl so am i just over worrying that i wont get her or shud i just play it out a month and wait till after the MASSIVE and i mean MASSIVE thousands of people are going 2 post my website and not 2 mention the NBA players who have 10′s of thosuands of follwers on twitters wont mind tweeting my website and on top of that radio hosts and fashion bloggers in NYC waiting for me 2 get going and the fact that ALLL the aunties will tell her mom that getting a guy back home is very stupid when u have a good looking (alotta people say i resemle jay sean..i look better lol) good morale kid,got a head on his shoulder got business etc everything just sitting here waiting 2 accept her i mean every1 in dallas even her friends once they hear about me and find out that im from a broken home WILL tell her and im taking like 100′s of her friends so what do you think is the out play of this because im in touch with her BFF like daily and BFF i mean BFFFFFF she is the only girl she hangs out with etc ALL THE TIME so i talk 2 her via aim FB so im jus overworrying right or what should i do?..btw i am TOOOOOO DAMN SHY 2 tell my mom i like this girl but i know my mom was told by this lady who jus LOVES 2 gossip and she just happens 2 be a really good friend of that girl’s mom wow 1 month i wonder what i shud do thank u every1 whoever answers
    u right jesse…..but i know her and her BFF told me erything about her…she isnt that type 2 go after money etc she doesnt even talk 2 guys or flirt only if it has 2 do with school at school but she dont go out with guys or nothing she just wants 2 get a good guy but being realistic know 1 wants her due 2 the fact her parents are divorced as mines are but know i think ur right im over thinking and when reality hits within a month i mean when she actually thinks about it if she gets a guy from abck home and the YEARS its gonna take 2 get him her and the fact know1 is gonna accept her other than me u no i think i shud just wait plus she is really pretty looks like eva longoria type etc but i think i shud jus wait it out no point of acting now I KNOW know1 is gonna go after her i mean maybe there are guys but their parents will say NO for sure u dont no the pakistani culture thanks 4 the answer

    but ummm i think you are over thinking.
    specialy when she finds out you’re famous she probably will want you, but what if she marrys you just to get in on the fame? and steals all your sh1t and rips your heart out? what if everything goes as plan and she goes to pakistan and gets killed. what if she falls in love with someone there? and never leaves? maybe she doesnt care if you get famous? if you want her now, act now? later is some times to late. all im saying is if you actaully love her do something about it, dont wait for your fame to make someone love you..?

    There is nothing wrong with kids from divorced homes marrying each other. It all depends on the person. Divorce effects children in different ways, so you can’t generalize that phrase for everyone. I come and I have 3 other siblings (2 brothers & 1 sister). My brother in law comes from a divorced home as well. My sister has been married to her husband for over 12 years and they love each other very much and have two children. My brother has has been married to his wife for over 15 years and they have 3 children. They love each other very much as well. Divorce impacts children in different ways and therefore look at marriage differently. If the two of you really love each other and understand that marriage is not going to be happy 100% of the time, then you can have a successful marriage. It will require you to assist each other during hard times and needed trust. So, don’t over worry and take care of each other. Avoid showing sign that you are not going to be there for her (e.g. leaving her, etc) She already had a man in her life leave her once, if you consistently show you are there, she will have faith in you. I hope this helps you.
