Demand Media CEO Richard Rosenblatt, speaking on an earnings call today, took to defending his company’s content, which is often subject to a great deal of criticism, though I would contend that much of the criticism is really geared toward Google for surfacing some of the more questionable (in quality) content over other results that would appear more authoritative. 

In reality, most of DM’s critics are often quick to acknowledge that they do produce some quality content, and I don’t think anyone has a problem with Google ranking that stuff well, when it makes sense. 

Ok, maybe some have a problem with it. Alternative search engines Blekko and DuckDuckGo went so far as to remove all of the content from Demand sites like eHow and AnswerBag from their indexes entirely. 

It is Google, however, that has been talking about focusing on content farms from the algorithmic standpoint, having even released a Chrome extension recently, which allows users to remove results from certain domains from their own search experiences – a move that actually sends Google signals that it could then potentially use in its ranking algorithm for all users. 

Rosenblatt’s not worried about it though. At least that’s the position he’s taking. He told reporters that Demand Media is "very careful" about following Google’s guidelines, and that the company considers itself "very white hat".

Of course, Google’s "guidelines" can always change, and to reiterate, the company has explicitly said that its focus is turning to content farms, and Demand Media is the first company that everybody thinks of when the phrase "content farm" is used. 

Demand’s properties, of course, come with heavy use of Google AdSense, and  as many have pointed out in the past, Google would stand to lose some revenue itself, should content farms that take advantage of the ad platform be whisked away from prominent search placement.

Rosenblatt indicated that the company is looking toward expanding its own brand advertiser base, though, which would make it somewhat less reliant on Google (though getting those high rankings would still seem pretty key). "The company is well positioned to capture an increasing share of brand revenue," he said. Current advertisers include American Express, Home Depot, L’Oreal, Dole and Samsung.

As far as Demand’s quality goes, Rosenblatt said they won’t be able to catch everything, but they "promise to get better", and that they have a more rigorous editorial process than many mainstream media outlets. He also indicated that the company is working on some kind of "curation layer" that would let users make suggestions for the improvement of articles. Hat tip to Joseph Tartakoff at Paid Content.

I just ordered the Google Adwords kit, but now I am worried. Has anyone tried this? Does it really work or is it a scam? It says it was on the news, and on NBC, ABC, and others.

Those kits are a scam. The information you need is free for the taking at Google but the people selling the kits capitalize on a newbie’s ignorance for profit.

I am a Google Advertiser, both AdWords and AdSense and I learned it all at Google.

Google has tutorials that teach you all you need to know to put an ad campaign together, but they don’t write the ads for you. They can set you up with someone to write AdSense ads for you if you want to go that way.

I don’t know what they charge or just how effective they are, but I do know that business is tough out there now, not near as easy as it was just 2 years ago.

Some advice about your Kit!

If you kept all the info from when you ordered it and still have all the info that came with it, you may be able to cancel the training and any supplemental programs that came with it. These ad on’s can cost you up to $90 a month.

If you want help with Google, someone to aid you while you set things up, I do this type of work. There are ways to test your ads before you place them and free ways to advertise as well.

I have seen tons of ads about making money at home through google adwords. They say it is as simple as following a cookbook. Is that true? Great questions! I have also seen and heard a lot of people preach about how easy it is to make money with Google AdWords… What many of them fail to tell you is how much it can cost you if you don’t know what you are doing, or exactly how to do it.

Firstly, to make money with AdWords you need to be selling something, or promoting something from which you will receive a commission. You need to understand, AdWords themselves cost you money, they are simply and advertisement. You make money using them by driving traffic to a product or service.

If you have a website already, you can make money with Google AdSense, but that is another topic in itself.

AdWords are fairly simple and step by step to open and create, however, the best course of action is to research and learn as much as possible before jumping in. Google have their very own training system to help you. Search Google AdWords Professional Training. Best of all it’s free.

All said and done, it is not a quick cash system, but used correctly can be very powerful and profitable.

As for making money without upfront cost, you really need to find a quality product or service to sell or promote, and start by promoting through word of mouth, networks, blogs and articles. Then when you have learnt more about AdWords, try paid advertising such as Pay-Per-Click.
