<g:plusone size="standard" count="true" url="http://www.yadayadamarketing.com/5469/duckduckgo-follows-content-farm-banning-with-promoting-wikihow-content/"></g:plusone>

Today, DuckDuckGo has started "hard wiring" wikiHow as the first result on its search engine results pages for how-to queries.

wikiHow founder Jack Herrick (who also ran eHow before selling to Demand Media) tells WebProNews, "As you know, there is tons of buzz on the web about what Google’s next step will be with tackling low quality content from content farms."

Earlier this week, Blekko announced it had banned sites that it views as spam. These included Demand Media properties like eHow and AnswerBag. "Months ago curated search engine DuckDuckGo.com had already removed eHow, all Demand Media properties, and other sites it considered spam content farms from its site," Herrick notes.

When asked exactly when DuckDuckGo shut down content farms, Founder Gabriel Weinberg tells WebProNews, "I’m not sure exactly, but it was a goal from day 1, and we were removing a lot of it from the get-go (launched sep 2008). As for demand media in particular, I’m guessing more like last July."

"The goal from the beginning was to remove useless sites," says Weinberg. "Made for AdSense (MFA) sites are in this category, i.e. sites with zero or very little content and lots of ads everywhere. These we try to ban algorithmically by detection via crawling the Web."

"Demand media is in a slightly different category of still lots of ads, but a bit more content," he adds. "The problem is the content is often of very poor quality. For sites like these, we’ve waited for user complaints. We received many complaints about eHow.com and then I launched into an investigation myself. Finding many (not all of course) of the pages to contain low quality content, it made sense to remove them in favor of better content."

"The fact that two nimble, curated search engines, DuckDuckGo and Blekko are making similar moves in the same week, may indicate a path that Google and Bing consider next," says Herrick. "If so, the web will be a very different place."

"wikiHow just hit 30 million unique monthly unique visitors," Herricks tells us. "We have grown 50% since December 2009 and doubled since June 2009. Especially impressive because we continue to be 100% bootstrap financed with only 9 employees."

"By contrast," he adds, "How-to Q&A site Mahalo has $21 MM in financing, 105 employees but only 12 MM unique visitors (source: CrunchBase and BusinessInsider). eHow (which I sold to Demand Media) is about 3x larger but relies on 13,000 paid freelancers to produce over 1 million articles per year. They also have larger financial resources as a publicly traded company with a $1.7 BN market cap."

To be clear, Herrick tells us, "There is no financial partnership, compensation, or even any contract between wikiHow and DuckDuckGo."

"I’ve never even met the founder. DuckDuckGo decided to do this solely because they are trying to increase the quality of search results for how-to content," he adds.

In case you are wondering how WikiHow’s content stacks up against eHow, we talked with Herricks about that, and will explore it more in an upcoming article on WebProNews.

<g:plusone size="standard" count="true" url="http://www.yadayadamarketing.com/5175/think-google-pagerank-doesnt-matter-think-again/"></g:plusone>

It looks like Google wants you to think PR doesn’t matter, but don’t let them fool you! For more than a decade now, Google has been trying to retrieve this metric from the radar of webmasters. That Google has stopped pushing regular updates to their toolbar is one more step in the strategy to convince you that PageRank doesn’t matter anymore.

Balderdash. Let’s look at the trouble Google’s gone to pull the wool over our eyes.

PageRank wasn’t unknown to webmasters in Google’s in the late 90s, but the search giant really spilled the beans on PageRank in December 2000 when it released the Google toolbar that included the metric that Google still describes today as "basis of Google’s search technology."

Google knew that the metric would be of vital – and viral – interest to webmasters and webmasters not only flocked to install the toolbar, they began using the metric for link swapping, selling and buying. It made PR manipulation so much easier when you could easily see Google’s estimation of the importance of a page.

Google has been backpedaling ever since. Unhappy with the manipulation of PageRank that was greatly enhanced by the ability to see the PR on any page, (but apparently unwilling to withdraw entirely the prime reason to keep the toolbar installed on your browser), Google fought back with a publicity campaign and with tools that sometimes backfired.

For example, in 2005, Google introduced the nofollow attribute to fight comment spam and encouraged webmasters to add it to their blogs. Not long after, they demanded that anyone selling text links use the nofollow attribute to discourage selling PR.

This handy attribute opened yet another can of PR worms for Google, as webmasters quickly learned how to apply to sculpt PageRank within a site and Google engineers had to change the way that Google divides links on a page to prevent webmasters from reassigning it with the use of nofollow.

Google stopped pushing data to the toolbar in late 2004 and established something of a quarterly schedule of updates with the hope, one assumes, that outdated PR would devalue the commodity. "The PageRank that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is for entertainment purposes only," Googlers reportedly announced that December.

In October of 2009, the ability to see the "importance of a page" was removed from Google’s Webmaster tools in the search giant’s ongoing campaign to take the focus off the PR metric, and 6 months later in April ’10, released what appears to be the last quarterly update. Webmasters report updates to toolbar PR often with no pattern, as though updates are now simply random and sporadic.

Google does seem to have effectively rendered the toolbar more useless than not, and it’s common to hear many webmasters insist that PageRank is no longer important.

Again, I say, balderdash! If PR wasn’t still a central factor in Google’s algorithm – or as Google puts it, the basis of their technology — why would they go to all this trouble to pretend otherwise?

I’ve been approached by a local company that specializes in SEO and was wondering if anyone has any experience and results dealing with one of these types of businesses? The cost is $129/mo.

I would not go for a company to do any SEO to business site if i were you. Hiring an SEO company will lead you to get into trouble because

1. They link farm and spam links
2. When links are produced very quickly of course for sometime you will be in the 1st 10 pages but once link spam has been identified you are in most case would be sandboxed. i.e is deindexed .

What i recommend you is my friend implement your own SEO campaign for your best suit. You can go through these 2 links to monetize the best out of SEO and traffic building
